Dimetrodon 2013 (Papo)

The Dimetrodon, often mistaken for a dinosaur, actually lived approximately 40 to 50 million years before the age of dinosaurs, during the Permian period. It was not a reptile either, but a member of the synapsid group, which is more closely related to mammals than to modern reptiles. Its most prominent feature is the large sail on its back, which was formed by elongated vertebral spines connected by skin. Scientists believe this sail may have been used for thermoregulation, allowing the animal to absorb or release heat more efficiently, though some suggest it may also have played a role in mating displays or intimidation tactics.

The Dimetrodon lived during the Permian, millions of years before the first dinosaur. This has not stopped it from becoming one of the most celebrated prehistoric animals in popular culture, noted for its familiar "sprawling" posture, with a distinctive sail running along the back.
